Palm Harbor

Located north of downtown St. Petersburg and west of Tampa, on the coast just north of Dunedin in Pinellas County, Palm Harbor is best noted for being a historic district in Florida. The place has gone through several name changes.

It was referred to as Yellow Bluff by early settlers. One early resident, Illinois native J.C. Craver, arrived in 1877 after his physician recommended a warmer climate to treat his tuberculosis. It was referred to as Yellow Bluff by early settlers. One early resident, Illinois native J.C. Craver, arrived in 1877 after his physician recommended a warmer climate to treat his tuberculosis. Craver engaged in fishing, farming, ranching and harvesting timbers on the densely forested acreage between Yellow Bluff (now Ozona) and Lake Butler (later on renamed Lake Tarpon).

When the yellow fever epidemic hit Tampa, Yellow Bluff was renamed Sutherland. It is the shortened name for Southern Land and Development Company, the entity that originally mapped out the place as Sutherland, Hillsborough County, back in 1888. The community was renamed Palm Harbor in 1925.

The best attractions at Palm Harbor include the championship golf course Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club, warm mineral springs, nearby white sand beaches, parks, and resorts. Visitors are also captivated by the historic buildings.

Family-friendly activities include a cruise to the breathtaking islands through a private charter. A must-see are the dolphins, sea turtles, and the Florida manatees typically found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, bays, and coastal water ecosystems of the southeastern parts of the US. Biking, hiking or kayaking is also some of the other favored activities at Palm Harbor. There are some interesting trails.

For those who simply want simple nature appreciation, Palm Harbor is a perfect spot to collect lovely shells, and get a mind-calming experience just looking at the calm turquoise waters. A wildlife refuge –housing over 200 species of birds, over 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, and at least 25 different species of mammals — is only an hour north of Palm Harbor.Indeed, the outdoors beckons visitors and dwellers.

A scenic drive-cum camping adventure thrills outdoor enthusiasts no end. Spacious camping sites with heated swimming pool, a private lake for fishing, beauty salon, clean shower and laundry facilities, plus planned activities in the winter season, can be found on the Pinellas bike trail.

A trip to, or near, Palm Harbor, Florida will not be complete without checking out the dining and shopping destinations at the downtown area. Several locally operated restaurants offer good portions of fancy-free foods like tacos, buffalo shrimp, burger sandwiches, and the like. Some of the eateries have cool outdoor patios. Palm Harbor also has popular snack shops like a doughnut store serving mouth-watering treats.

Palm Harbor also attracts a huge number of people to its annual Palm Harbor Citrus festival, which spells loads of fun for families. During this event, there are lots of games and carnival rides, dancing, live entertainment, and also a pageant. In recent years, an added attraction was the 5K walk/run and one-mile walk/run and winning participants get to bring home the annual race medals.

The ocean-side array of shops, restaurants, amusement centers, not to mention an aquarium – all at a pier 25 miles south of Palm Harbor — are worth visiting.
