Cross Creek community is well-known as the subject of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, featuring her memoir Pulitzer Prize-winning The Yearling describing last 25 years of her life. This was made into a motion picture in 1983 and since then, a lot of fans flock to this small town near Gainesville in North Central Florida.

Visitors experience walking back in time in a Florida farm life setting as it existed in the early 1930s. Rawling’s cracker-style house and farm where she dwelled for 25 years has been restored and preserved to be a National Historic Landmark in 2007 where visitors can tour the house with a guide in costume from October till July.

There are also picnic areas and playground situated in the park adjacent to the house. Cross Creek Sampler is the only place to eat for starters where you get to taste crisp fried green tomatoes that come with a choice of spicy remoulade, honey mustard and ranch dressing. They also serve fried gator, frogs’ legs and portabella mushrooms which is a real homage to Cracker cooking.

Once you arrive at The Yearling, everything looks nostalgic. Even the restaurants look dusty and faded just the way there were back in 1952 which first opened as a bunkhouse for fishermen in the 1940s. Most locals cast fishing lines into the waters for pleasure as well. Some eat their catch but some just toss it back. The peace is profound since a small number of cars drive by on this country road and you will also see comfortable chairs to pass time watching the water move.
