Valrico is situated in East-Central Hillsborough County and bordered to the southwest by Bloomingdale, west by Brandon, and to the south by FishHawk. It is also 10 miles southwest of Plant City and 14 miles east of Tampa via State Road 60.

Valrico was previously known as Long Pond even before Civil War, which comprised of various cotton plantations. In the 1880s, the name was changed to Valrico which means “rich valley” in Spanish. That was when a professor in Philosophy from Tufts College William G. Tousey, purchased a property along with huge number of immigrants.

The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad were eventually developed for the people and soon as the railroad was finished, Tousey started establishing the retail stores, streets, a bank as well to help the community progress. However, in 1895, a major freeze discontinued these constructions and the residents began to decrease. Despite of this, the town proceeded to carry on, with the completion of a schoolhouse in 1896.

Still having an extreme drop in number of population in 1911, local landowners continued to develop the town and in 1910 until 1914, Judge Hamner, Gov. Van Sant, D. Humbird, W.H., S.C. Phipps and W.F. Miller initiated a development project along Hopewell Road which was later named as SR 60. Serving as the Valrico Improvement Association president, W.F. Miller came up with $3,500 to establish the Valrico Civic Center, currently named as the James McCabe Theatre. In 1912, the very first general store of Valrico was launched by Lovett Brandon.

During the stock market downfall in 1929, Valrico once again experienced a major setback wherein almost all the business in the town had to shut down. However, growth was seen in the mid-1950s principally because of the SR 60 connection to Tampa’s Adamo Drive, putting Valrico right next to a main Florida access.
